Foote MathCounts Team Finishes Second in Connecticut

More than 100 Connecticut middle schools began the MathCounts competition series last month, and 26 of those schools advanced to the state contest in Hartford on Saturday, March 11. When the dust settled in the capital city, Foote finished in second place, narrowly missing a repeat of their 2016 state championship.

The four-person Foote team consisted of eighth grade captain Ting Li, seventh grader Jasmine Xi, and sixth graders Amy Metrick and Ryan Yang. Ryan had a great day, finishing in third overall individually (out of 202 participants) to earn a place on the four-person Connecticut state team at the national MathCounts competition, to be held in May in Orlando, Florida. Ting finished 14th overall, the third straight year that he qualified for the 16-person "countdown" round In Hartford. Amy finished in the top quarter of all scorers, and Jasmine finished in the top half. Eighth graders Hunter Bershtein and Theo Curtis also qualified and participated in Hartford after turning in excellent performances in the New Haven chapter contest last month. Overall, the Foote School had six students qualify for the state competition, more than any other school from the New Haven chapter.

Foote's Mathcounts team is coached by Middle School Math Chair Megan Williams and math teacher John Hay. The team meets on Thursdays during study hall and once a month on Saturdays. The club is open to all Middle School students. There are no tryouts and every interested student has the chance to participate in at least two competitions throughout the year.
